Swimming on a Cape Town roof works best from January to March, when highs reach 27°C in January and the three-month stretch is the warmest of the year. Every one of the 15 hotels we list has a rooftop pool, but only one sells access to non-guests. Eight are guests only, and six don't publish who can swim.

Our first pick is Cloud 9 in Gardens: a R300 minimum spend gets non-residents onto the roof, and it is the only pool on our list with day access sold online. If you're booking a room anyway, The Silo at the V&A Waterfront has a heated rooftop pool, for residents only.

Where to stay: Cape Town's rooftop pools by area

Camps Bay

Camps Bay is named among the three most popular bases to stay, and visitors head out there for the coast. The Marly is the listed hotel here, with a heated pool for guests.

V&A Waterfront

The V&A Waterfront is popular with tourists and listed among the trendiest neighborhoods in the city. The Silo, with its heated rooftop pool, is the listed hotel here.

Sea Point

The Hyde has the rooftop deck in Sea Point, and it doesn't publish who can swim. The area is named among the most popular bases for staying in Cape Town and listed among the trendiest neighborhoods.

Green Point

Green Point is a popular area, listed alongside Gardens, Tamboerskloof and De Waterkant. ANEW Green Point and Cape Royale are both here, and neither publishes its access rules.

Foreshore

Foreshore is described as the best area in town to stay in, and you can walk from it to the Waterfront. Hotel Sky, with a heated pool, is the listed hotel.

Cheaper ways to swim in Cape Town

Public pools cost far less than a hotel stay: Newlands Swimming Pool charges R9 for adults, and Sea Point Pavilion charges R39.00 for ages 16 and up. The Pavilion's salt water pool is Olympic-sized and 1.5 meters deep, suited to laps. Neither is on a roof.

  • Sea Point Pavilion: R39.00 (adults, 16+). Fact: the Olympic-sized salt water pool is 1.5 meters deep, suited to lap swimming.
  • Newlands Swimming Pool: R9 (adults). Fact: offers Olympic-size pools.
  • Wynberg Swimming Pool. Fact: listed opening hours are 10:00–17:00. No admission price stated in the source.

Hotels you might expect here, and why they're not

These Cape Town hotels often come up in searches, but no source places their pool on the roof.

  • The President Hotel. No source places the pool on the roof. Time Out describes a wide pool terrace that guests look down onto from the rooms, and the hotel's own post mentions "poolside and garden space". Only the pool-level terrace is described.
  • The Onyx Hotel. None of the provided sources mention a swimming pool at The Onyx Hotel. The hotel's own pages describe apartments, dining, and a Sanctuary Spa, but no pool. Google Maps lists a gym. Per the rules, no pool is reported as not-rooftop.
  • One&Only Cape Town. Time Out places the pool complex on a separate island, and no source mentions a roof or top-floor terrace.
  • Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel, Cape Town. Only one third-party source (Time Out) mentions the pools, and it places them in a secret garden behind the hotel. No source says a pool is on the roof. The hotel's own pages and the Google Maps listing do not mention a pool.
  • Cape Town Marriott Hotel Crystal Towers. Marriott's own overview describes the poolside Acara Pool Bar & Terrace as first-floor, which outweighs the third-party "rooftop" descriptions (Hotels.com, Roomer). No source explicitly says the pool is on the roof, and the hotel's own page places it on the first floor.
  • Gorgeous George Hotel. The hotel's site describes Gigi Rooftop as a rooftop bar with city views. No source mentions a swimming pool, so it is not a confirmed rooftop pool.
  • Ellerman House. No source places the main pool on a roof or top floor. The hotel describes a pool terrace overlooking the Atlantic, and Time Out describes sea views over lawns. The villa infinity pools are separate and not rooftop.
  • The Cellars-Hohenort, an SLH Hotel. No source places a pool on the roof or a top-floor terrace. The pools sit in gardens beside the manor terrace and in a walled garden. The hotel's FAQ says three pools, but its amenities page and homepage say two, so the hotel's own pages were used and the count is conflicting.

Cape Town rooftop pools: questions people ask

Which Cape Town hotels let non-guests swim on the roof?

One: Cloud 9 in Gardens, where a R300 minimum spend gets non-residents onto the roof and day access is sold online. Eight hotels on our list are guests only, including The Silo, The Trade and Pullman. Six don't publish access, among them The Hyde and ANEW Green Point, so confirm with the hotel.

Are any Cape Town rooftop pools heated or open in winter?

Yes, five are listed as heated: The Silo, Pullman Cape Town, The Marly, Urban Aparthotel and Hotel Sky. THE GREY is the one to watch, because its pool closes for winter and reopens in October. Highs fall to 17°C in July and August, so heating matters then.

Which Cape Town hotel has the highest rooftop pool?

No hotel on our list publishes its pool floor, so we can't name the highest. Check with the hotel for the floor if height matters to you.

How can I swim in Cape Town for the least money?

R9 for adults at Newlands Swimming Pool, a public pool. Sea Point Pavilion charges R39.00 for ages 16 and up. For a rooftop, Cloud 9's R300 minimum spend is the only non-guest route on our list.

Are Cape Town's rooftop pools open to hotel guests only?

For most of them, yes: eight are guests only and six don't publish who can swim. Only Cloud 9 sells day access. Heated guest pools include The Silo, Pullman Cape Town and The Marly.
