Only residents of the community can use Aurelien's rooftop pool, so it suits longer stays rather than a quick swim. If you do get access, the sundeck has cabanas, pillow-top beds and skyline views.

The pool

At 833 N Clark St on the Near North Side, Aurelien has an outdoor pool on a rooftop sundeck. Large pillow-top beds ring the pool, private cabanas sit beside it, and the views are panoramic across the Chicago skyline. Access is limited to residents, and the floor isn't published.

Our take

This is a residents-only deck, much like Soho House and Lincoln Common on our list, which are also closed to outsiders. Unlike a hotel with a day pass, it gives a visitor no route in without a resident's connection.

On the plus side, there is more than a pool. A separate Garden Terrace has bocce courts, fire pits and grilling stations, and a fitness center is on site. The season isn't published, so ask before assuming it's open in cold months.

Tips

  • Skip this one for a short trip and choose a pool with a day pass, such as the DoubleTree from $30.

Before you go. Check that your booking or lease includes pool access, since it is for residents only.
