Our pick for a heated roof pool with a hot tub, as long as you visit in spring or early summer. The hotel publishes the season but not the floor or who can swim, so confirm access before you count on it.
The pool
The roof at Level has an outdoor heated pool with a hot tub, in River North on the Near North Side. Loungers, daybeds and cabanas sit around it, with fire pits and BBQ grilling stations in the outdoor lounge areas. The hotel doesn't publish the floor or its access rules.
Our take
Level is one of the few pools on our list that says outright it's heated. That counts for something with an average high of 3.2°C in December and 0.4°C in January. It runs spring and summer only, so the heating stretches the shoulder months rather than the winter.
The downside is access. Level doesn't state whether outside visitors can swim, and it lists no day pass. If a sure walk-in swim matters more, the DoubleTree on Magnificent Mile lists passes from $30.

Tips
- Aim for June to August, the best three months to swim in Chicago.
- Confirm with the hotel that the pool is open for your dates, since it runs spring and summer only.
Before you go. Check the pool's opening dates for your stay, because it is seasonal and the hotel gives no exact start or end date.
